Gathering of European Young Politicians under the High Patronage the Armenian President


On May 1st to 3rd in Tsakhkadzor an unofficial get-together of young politicians from a number of European countries took place under the high patronage of President Serzh Sargsyan. The get-together aimed at encouraging informal discussions between young politicians around such topics as international relations, as well as political and economic issues. During the first day the participants had interesting discussions on involving youth in political life.

One of the topics of concern was global economic crisis and ways to overcome it. According to the leader of the Russian youth movement "Nashi" Nikita Borovikov the effects of the crisis are possible to mitigate through the competent economic encouragement policy conducted by the state. The First Secretary of Belarus Republican Youth Union Central Committee Yuri Krivobudski expressed hope that the practical suggestions made by the young people would receive their logical continuation and contribute to the process of overcoming the crisis.

The leader of the Belgian organization "European Friends of Armenia" Michael Kambeck was interested in the activity level of Armenian youth organizations and made a suggestion to apply the experience of European countries in the Republic of Armenia as a precedent. The Federal Coordinator of "Molodaya Gvardiya" youth organization of Yedinaya Rossija party Aleksey Shaposhnikov suggested finding future ways of cooperation.

According to the planned schedule, the next day the guests met with Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and received comprehensive answers to the questions of concern during the informal question and answer session. The Head of Foreign Policy Center of Kazakhstan President Staff Mazhgan Ilyasov was interested in the potential scope of cooperation between Armenia and Kazakhstan. The questions were asked regarding the participation of youth in decision-making processes, etc.

President Serzh Sargsyan visited the participants and told them about the activities of his young years. He addressed topics of concern, such as the Artsakh issue and bettering Armenia-Turkey relations. He presented the peculiarities of his work with youth, pointing to the fact that a great number of people on his staff are young politicians. During the supper held after the meeting the participants had opportunity to enjoy Armenian songs and dancing organized on behalf of the President.

The European Young Political Leaders were also hosted by His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II of All Armenians. The questions directed to him mainly referred to the faith of the world-spread Armenian nation and relations of the Armenian Church with the representatives of the world religions and religious convictions. The Supreme Patriarch gave his blessing to the participants of the gathering and wished them successes for the sake of prosperity and solidarity.

Young politicians went sightseeing, which included the unforgettable trip to the "Ararat" Brandy factory. They also received the warmest impressions from the history of Armenia and hospitality of its people. The friendly atmosphere developed between the participants during the three-day gathering will undoubtedly contribute to establishing future cooperation.
