Halloween or as it is usually referred to the eve of All Saints Day is an ancient Celtic holiday. It has a history of around 2 thousand years and is celebrated on October 31^st.  In the VII century the Pope Boniface IV proclaimed November 1^st as All Saints Day, trying to prevent Englishmen from following the pagan customs. Nevertheless the tradition continued and remained in people’s memories.

The celebration starts with “Samhain Festival”, when the Goddess of Plants day is commemorated. This day the pumpkin lamps are prepared in order to turn out witches and evil souls of the city.  This was done in order to provide for the abundant harvest for the next year.  The kids gather and ask people for sweets. In case the sweets are not provided the children could even cause harm. That day everybody is dressed up in funny or horrifying clothes and wear masks. Nowadays this holiday is returning to Europe, where it is celebrated with great festivity by organizing a masquerade.  

The holiday has come to Armenia just recently, being interpreted as a pastime rather than religious and ritual holiday.
